Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr.

photograph made in the San Francisco Mayor's office, Monday, 12.29.03
I first met Mayor Brown in the 1980's when he was just a California State Senator.
I enjoy making photographs of colorful people in the street, and the annual Pride Parade in San Francisco would have to be one of the most colorful events, with the most creative people, in the United States.  I enjoyed the parades in the 1980's best as it was still a rare event, and being less planned than recent years, seemed like a good excuse for everyone to come into the streets of the city, enjoy the June weather (if we were lucky) have a great party, sharing a general feeling of goodwill with everyone.

Before it became 'political' to appear at this event, Willie Brown attended and generously agreed to talk with anyone who approached him.  I have a series of photographs of my son standing with the Mayor over the years, and was struck by how open and patient Mayor Brown was, whether he was talking to a potential voter or the ten year old son of a crazy guy with a camera.  I was happy that Ben was a Giants fan when he was younger, or at least I was able to get him to wear my Giants cap for the photograph.

Mayor Brown leaves office after eight years next week, and I look forward to seeing him again in June, laughing and enjoying another day in The City with a few hundred thousand friends.
